FINAL - artist portraits: mj
This is the first shoot among the series of shoots for my final project. I wanted to reached out to local artists that I know personally and have them bring their artwork, outfits that they felt reflected their art style, and any other items that inspire their work. I tried to create an art studio space within the photo studio where each artist's work could be displayed and they could be photographed among their work in a way that looks really natural and organic. I wanted this series to show how an individual's fashion can emulate and inspire the work they create as an artist. My first model, MJ, wrote this statement for me:
"In the last few years, abstract work has emerged as a way for me to sift through my thoughts and feelings without laboring over precise wordings or exact visual representations. Working abstractly is a kind of automatism, a process through which I can follow my instincts and allow colors and organic forms to express what I can’t quite reach with words. A lot of the work that I'm pictured with comes from a time when I was first starting to work abstractly, and was beginning to take risks with color. This has definitely translated into what I wear - I've always seen clothing as a vessel for creative expression, but I've gotten braver with colors, patterns, and voluminous shapes and definitely think of putting together the different pieces of an outfit almost like a mixed media process. These colors and shapes I'm attracted to in my clothes definitely reflect some forms in my abstract pieces. Most recently I've started experimenting with printmaking and photography on textiles and clothing and it's an exciting development in my creative process."

This is my second shoot for this series. The model wrote this statement regarding her art, her inspirations, and how that translates into how she dresses:
"My most recent creations stem from escapism and diving into a magical reality. I am creating places for myself, and for any who lay their eyes on my work, to rest and heal. I am inspired by video games and concepts from my childhood which I seek to bring back to life. These things calm me when I am overstimulated and need to relax or shift my focus. The simple shapes, patterns and colors combined in my work create childlike fantasies. My favorite and most accessible mediums have been colored pencils, markers, thread, and my iPad. I tend to shift mediums depending on what stimulates me in any given moment. I love to create with fibers as well. I collect various fabrics or threads which inspire my line work and patterning. Sometimes my fashion has no direct link to my artwork, but lately I find myself wearing many different textures of cloth as well as pastel colors. When it comes to more intentional outfits, color has been the most reflective of my art. I wear things that express who I am, and I am not afraid to show that."

This was my third and final shoot for this series. The model shared this statement with me about their art and inspirations:
"As a recent BFA graduate, I have stepped away from creating conceptual work to allow myself to be reintroduced with the simple joys of art making. My current work reflects how I am reconfiguring old techniques and creating art for myself. During this time, I have been exploring a new yet familiar medium of candle-making as I continue my journey with ceramics. I am inspired by cherubic imagery, my love for baking and video games. I am excited to see how I will connect the work I make now with my past work."
